Berwick rugby club's Mini Section is now in full swing. This season sees Mandy Ritchie taking over the role of Mini Convenor with husband Darren helping with the other coaches. The Mini Section looks after boys and girls between the ages of 7-12 and introduces them to the basic skills of rugby in a fun and friendly environment.

“Rugby at this age should be based around fun and exercise." said Mandy. "We only introduce contact and proper tackles for the older age groups and in a very controlled and safe way. Tag rugby is the main part of what they do with us.” Sessions run every Sunday morning starting at 10.30 and the format includes more fixtures against other clubs than last year.

The youngsters get to meet others from different schools and the whole event is organised around fun with many parents joining in by watching munching bacon rolls with the youngsters in the clubhouse after the training!

The under 8 tag rugby team are Berwick rugby club's youngest playing
members and were soon in the action at Scremerston on Sunday morning.
A great honour has been given to a Berwick youngster as he has been chosen as the official mascot for the Scottish team  for the Scotland-Wales match in this years Six Nations Tournament at Murrayfield. Nine year old Logan Ritchie who attends Tweedmouth Middle School in the town will lead out the Scottish team on February 8th.
Logan has been a member of Berwick Rugby Club's minis section since he was 7 and is really looking forward to his day.
"We are all very pleased for Logan" said the club's press officer Steve Newman " as he is a lovely lad and always tries his hardest at training and when playing. Already he shows signs of being an excellent player and we are looking forward to watching him as he progresses through the youth sides of the club and into the senior teams."
Our picture shows Logan raring to go at recent match when he was acting as a ballboy with his dad Darren who also helps coach the minis along with Logan's mum Mandy who does a stirling job organising the mini section.
