Langholm 10 Berwick 5

The Berwick XV which took to the pitch at Langholm was unrecognisable from the team which played the previous week against RHC. A raft of players were unavailable due to other commitments, injuries and illness. Indeed two of the call offs happened on the morning of the match. The players called up to the First Team did their chances of a permanent place no harm at all as none of them looked out of place amongst the regular First Team players. The Blacks had hoped to bounce back from last week’s loss and they came out showing the right balance of aggression and attitude. Berwick scored within the first 5 minutes and it was a classic move which brought it about. James Warcup showed some deft touches kicking to touch and one of them found the line out deep inside Langholm territory. The line out was accurate and a catch and drive ensued. The Langholm pack was no match for the determined Scremerston outfit and the driving maul made unrelenting progress to the line to allow Tony McDougall to touch down. Matthew McCreath took over the kicking duties this week and he unfortunately didn’t catch his kick properly with the ball failing to get off the ground sufficiently to clear the posts.

Instead of capitalising on their early score the Berwick side seemed to hesitate and this allowed Langholm to regroup and their pack started to disrupt the Berwick play. This lead to scrappy ball for the Berwick backs and meant that the forward momentum was lost. Berwick then went behind in 15 minutes when from a quickly taken Langholm free kick their standoff Neil Cubbin was able to ghost through the Berwick defence after a Berwick player missed the first tackle. Cubbin was able to touch down near to the posts and this made the conversion a formality giving Langholm a 7-5 lead.

The quality of the game then deteriorated and the remainder of the first half consisted of broken play with neither side able to string enough phases of play together to take control of the game. Berwick however started to dominate in the scrum and for the first time this year they added to this almost complete control of the line out too. All of the pack played their part but in particular Captain Jamie Young, Stuart Cockburn, Graeme Skeen and Adam Pearson caught the eye. With so much ball the backs also were able to show some deft touches with James Warcup continuing to improve with each game and Stephen Crees using his strength to good effect making ground on a regular basis.

The second half continued in much the same vain as the first with Berwick having the upper hand in terms of possession but failing to capitalise on it. The Langholm back row was very effective at disrupting the play and as a result the penalty count started to go against them. This seemed to raise the temperature of the home crowd as they became very vocal. Both sides had penalty attempts which missed the target and then against the run of play half way through the second half Berwick strayed offside at the break down. This time Cubbin connected with the ball cleanly to make the score 10-5 to the home side. The game ended with Berwick continuing to pressure the home side but because they were unable to control the ball properly they couldn’t string sufficient phases of play together allowing Langholm to clear their lines with long clearances from Cubbin. The 2nd half saw the debut in the second row of Geoff Logan for Berwick as well as the return from injury of Club Captain Colin Young. Logan brought an increased physicality to the game and he should be pleased with his debut.

This is another game which the Berwick team should have won based on the possession they enjoyed. However by losing it they have dropped into 10th place and this means that each game from now on takes on extra significance as they near the half way point in this year’s League campaign.

This week’s game is against East Kilbride and a good home win would go a long way to restoring the confidence in the team and bring about an improvement in the League position. Kickoff is 3pm
