30th April 2009

Where has the last month gone! Well April is one of the busiest months in the Club calendar and also the day job gets in the way as well. During the last month we have had another successful Club Dinner which was well attended and involved a few beverages being consumed by everyone attending. We then moved quickly onto the Club 7’s which was a brilliantly sunny day, although if you were in the wind it got a bit chilly! It was again very successful and the Club are very grateful to all of the volunteers who helped out. We just need more of you next year!

At the moment the seniors and colts are involved in sevens tournaments but because of the bad weather we still have 2 League games to play. This gets almost impossible as we lose players to cricket, golf, rowing and other summer pastimes. Usually this fits in well and we are glad the players have other interests but this season we are struggling to get the games played. The SRU are adamant that we play them; both away fixtures but they don’t seem to be relevant to anything for one game. Dalziel just missed out on promotion and are well up the table. We can’t be relegated but still the SRU insist we travel up there at a cost of £450 for the bus! The other game is against Cumbernauld and this maybe more relevant as they are involved in the relegation issue, but they play a couple of fellow strugglers and so our game with them maybe academic by then. Again however we will incur another £450 for a bus to play that game. Sometimes I wonder if common sense comes into play. I accept the League needs to be integral to our season and the sponsors want to see the games all played but sometimes I just wonder if this is necessary. It wasn’t our fault the games couldn’t be played but rather it was down to the opposition but we get penalised.

I hear through the grapevine that Jim Greenwood is in the BGH after taking unwell at church. Jimmy is a former President of the club and until a few years ago he was Club Secretary and is undoubtedly a real Berwick club man. I’m told he is staying in for a couple of days observation but he should be back to support the Blacks soon. On behalf of everyone at the club I wish him a speedy recovery.

Sunday and the touring side from Harrogate are here along with our friends from Duns for a Mini Tournament for the kids section aged 12 and under. We have kids in the mini section from the age of 5. They play non contact for the most part and the basic elements of rugby are taught in stages so that they have some clue about passing, tackling and running with the ball. The most important thing is for them to enjoy it and to have fun. When you are coaching them it is usually a lot of fun too when they chat away to you. For the most part we have very supportive parents as well who come along to support their kids. Without this section of the club we would have no future. Aero was their after a plea for help from the Mini section and he gave me the low down on the 1st team loss. Murrayfield seem to have benefited from the coaching they have been receiving from some of the Edinburgh Pro players. Aero reckoned they were the best drilled defensively that he has played against this year.

The 1st XV lost on the road at Dalkeith and the 2nds lost very narrowly against Gateshead. The 2nds have been the unsung heroes of this season for me. They don’t get the publicity that the other teams do, they play in 2 very competitive leagues and they have struggled because the number of players has dropped. The First team can always pull players out of the 2nds or Colts but the 2nds haven’t had a 3rd team to call upon this year. Humey and Grant have tried their best to get a team out every week even though at times they have been playing for the 1st team at the same time. Next season they are both stepping down and I’ve spoken to a few people who are willing to manage the team, coach it and also to captain it. So next year we should have a new Captain and Vice Captain, a Team Manager and also a couple of coaches and someone to run the line for them as well. We just need more players. Anyone that wants to come back to Berwick then just come along.

“Rugby Life” - A blog by the VP

The aim of this blog is to give a day to day view of what goes on at Berwick Rugby Club. I don’t mean it to cover everything that goes on at the Club otherwise I’d spend all day writing it. It will hopefully inform the members and players about events in the pipeline and the things that are going on. The views and comments on this blog are my own personal views and should in no way be taken as representing the Executive of the club.
