Tuesday night is club night. We had a 7’s meeting as well so double the chat. The Berwick 7’s are one of the main income events of the year and this year we could do with a really big day. We still need volunteers to help and it does mean a bit of “arm twisting” to get some help which is a shame. If more people offered to help out for a few hours it would mean so much to the club as whole. I’m a real fan of 7’s (probably ‘cos as a prop forward on the heavier side of slim I didn’t play them much) and I hope the 7’s season gets the support it deserves. When you watch the speed of the game now it really does provide a springboard for the fast and really athletic players to show off without us slower guys getting in the way. Because it is so fast it also excites the kids and people who don’t watch rugby all the time. On top of that the beer tent is open and it is a great social occasion.

Youngy must have played pretty badly on Saturday as he was being wound up by just about everyone. Jim Turner (G & T) apparently approached Youngy at the end of the game after Youngy had sent up a rousing cheer to clap PL off the pitch with the line ”Youngy that cheer was the best thing you’ve done all day; you were awful”. With friends like that who needs enemies. Colin took it all in good spirit which I think comes when as a player you have more good games than bad and over the years Colin has certainly had plenty of good games.

The club also has a touring team on Sunday and Mandy has been really struggling to get enough referees and helpers to give a hand, she was pretty stressed last night. I asked how she and Darren had got on putting together the new “minis shed” the parents group has bought to store some mini’s equipment and learnt rather forcefully it had taken about 5 hours on Saturday afternoon to get it put together and it still wasn’t concreted in place. Not the best of questions for me to ask!

Mother’s Day and Mrs VP and I have the morning off as the Mini’s are playing away at Kelso. So Mandy gets to have lots of extra kids on Mother’s Day; how lucky! Next week sees Harrogate coming to Berwick to play a Mini’s Tournament and there are a couple of Midi fixtures and a Christening later in the afternoon. I’m going to enjoy the day off as it looks as if next week will be a lot busier!

On the plus side the First XV won against Preston Lodge, on the downside England beat Scotland. As a Scot this makes life a bit more trouble over the next few months. I’ll have various English fans reminding me of the score at every opportunity and I have no come back for 12 months. The First XV secured an important win when they beat PL. It relegates PL but also opens up a little distance between us and the relegation zone. East Kilbride looks as if they could be in trouble and the next week or so will make the picture a lot clearer.

Signed up to the Facebook experience and joined the Berwick Rugby Club Group to see if it’s worthwhile or not. At least it will give me and the kids something to talk about; they don’t like rugby much. You can join the group too using the link on the homepage of the website.

“Rugby Life” - A blog by the VP

The aim of this blog is to give a day to day view of what goes on at Berwick Rugby Club. I don’t mean it to cover everything that goes on at the Club otherwise I’d spend all day writing it. It will hopefully inform the members and players about events in the pipeline and the things that are going on. The views and comments on this blog are my own personal views and should in no way be taken as representing the Executive of the club.
