Berwick 39 Annan 0

The Blacks bounced back from last week’s loss at Dalziel with a greatly improved team performance leading to a convincing win. Annan were without a number of players due to a spate of injuries during pre-season. At various times during the game they put pressure on the Berwick line but in reality Berwick ran out convincing winners. The opening exchanges resulted in a penalty to Berwick which Jack Webster duly converted in the 12th minute. The Blacks then had to reorganise after a potentially serious blow when they lost Captain Colin Young to ligament damage in his ankle. Neil Graham replaced the injured Captain and it took a period of time for the team to settle again. In the 29th minute prop Ben Frost scored a fine try in his debut appearance for the Blacks. This was well converted by Jack Webster to make the score 10 nil to Berwick. Sustained pressure on the Annan line nearly resulted in more scoring soon after but it wasn’t until just before half time that Berwick scored 2 tries to put the result beyond doubt before the break. The first try was scored by Tony McDougal after a good offload by Grant Younger keeping the ball alive allowing good work by the forwards to pile over, with Tony at the bottom. The next try belonged to the backs when the assured James Warcup kicked into space after the forwards won a 50-50 ball. Warcup’s fine kicked then bounced perfectly into the arms of Gareth Hill who continued his fine start to the season by rounding the defence to touch down under the posts. With the try being converted by Webster the half time whistle blew with the score 22-0 to Berwick.

Annan came out from the break much refreshed and enjoyed their best period of pressure of the game. However a fine try broke their spirits when a good period of inter play between forwards and backs allowed James Mechan space following a mis-move. The Berwick centre capped a fine display by touching down for the try. This was again converted by Webster. Annan were a defeated team at this point but they still put up a stuffy resistance but the Blacks added 2 more tries from scrum half Mark Laidlaw, one of which was converted by Webster to make the final score 39-0 to the Blacks. Laidlaw’s first try came from a scrum inside the 22 which was picked up by Berwick number 8 Robert Haggerstone who after making good progress was able to offload to Laidlaw who was supporting him. Laidlaw’s 2nd try came from a sustained period of pressure on the Annan try line and Laidlaw was able to wriggle over to touch down. Webster’s missed conversion signalled the last kick of the game.

Berwick can take much from this game with the backs benefitting from better ball from the forwards. All of the back line looked dangerous with the ball in hand with Mechan and Graham also putting in some excellent tackles at centre to stifle any Annan threat. The forwards all put in a much improved performance and looked much sharper in the contact situation than their opponents. It is fair to say that the missing players from Annan meant they were not as much of a threat as they perhaps hoped but Berwick won the important battles on the pitch to run out convincing winners. Next week’s game against Edinburgh University will surely be tougher but on this performance the Blacks look well placed to break their away hoodoo to bring back another win.
